MRCS part A -
09-16-2007, 07:25 PM
Hello all.
The new-style MRCS part A exams have just been sat by "lucky" candidates. Let's use this forum to give everyone a guide as to how these new exams were.
What is the format? Is there alot of anatomy questions? What were the most useful books to use? Do you think you passed?!

Good luck to everyone sitting the MRCS part A on Tuesday. Having MMC application forms come out the week before the exams (and so negate any last-minute cramming) will hopefully drop the pass mark considerably!
I'll see you there!

Mrcs Part A -

How did everyone find the MRCS part A papers?
I think the first paper (basic sciences) was pretty tough, lots of microbiology; the second paper (clinical application) was a little better, and I think one could draw from experiences with actual patients to answer some of the questions, which is a good test of a clinical paper.
Let me know your thoughts.
And also let me know how fun it was filling in all of the MMC application forms!

MRCS part A -
05-12-2008, 11:15 AM
Hi,
Well I sat the mrcs part A paper (basically old part 1 and 2 combined into one exam, two paper).
The only book I used was Raferty's basic clinical sciences book and passed. The main focuses in my exam were
1. limb anatomy (alot of relationships e.g. the nerve is lateral/medial etc to artery)
2. microbiology (pt presents with abscess, which bug and which antibiotic)
3. basic pathology (definition of hyperplasia, role of tumour suppressor genes)
4. general surgery (most of it can be picked up from work, but you may want to supplement this with a standard clinical textbook)
The basic sciences book does NOT teach you anatomy in a comprehensive way and you can't really rely on it for viva's BUT the book is written for these exams and is adequate for passing them (but not adequate for properly learning anatomy).
Hope this helps.
Let me know of any more questions you or others have
Raj
