The most obvious cause for post-operative shivering is hypothermia. Could be avoided if temperature is maintained. Shivering increases O2 demand by 300-600%, so can cause hypoxia. Hypoxia would cause metabolic acidosis (respiratory acidosis is raised CO2). Shivering is quite common with spinals & epidurals (in upper half of body). Postop shivering does respond to opiates.
