Hypokalemia (K <3.5mmol/l) can be cause by reduced intake or excessive losses via GI tract(diarrhoea, fistula) or kidney (conns, diuretics). In addition redistribution from the extracellular to the intracellular compartments for example by alkalosis, insulin catecholamines may be responsible. It is associated with muscle weakness and ECG changes including ST depression, t wave inversion, Q-t and p-r prolongation.
