Insulin is primarily an anabolic hormone which facilitates storage of energy in the body in the form of fat deposition and also protein anabolism. It helps the body utilise glucose as much as possible for all the anabolism. It is hence antagonised by all the other hormones in the body in stress including growth hormone, catecholamines, cortisol and glucagon. One of the actions of glucose is to facilitate passage of K into the cells in presence of glucose, hence its use in hyperkalemia.
