The process of iodide uptake into the thyroid gland is dependent on the process of iodide trapping. This process is facilitated by TSH. In fact TSH stimulates the majority of steps in the formation of thyroid hormones. These include iodide trapping, iodination coupling, thyroglobulin synthesis, and active thyroid hormone secretion.
TSH is not directly responsible for an increase in the metabolic rate. This occurs due to the effects of T3 and T4.
