Glucagon is a hormone secreted by the alpha cells of the pancreas. It leads to glucose mobilization by glycogenolysis, and gluconeogenesis, lipolysis and proteolysis. It aims to prevent hypoglycaemia.
It has an inotropic and chronotropic effect on the heart. Half life 10 mins. Secretion is stimulated by starvation, insulin, exercise, gastrin and starvation.
