Infusion of any fluid causes he vascular compartment to expand ,expansion of interstitial fluid compartment as fluid passes from vascular compartment.fluid distribute within the ECF thus 3/4 interstitial, 1/4 in plasma.
expansion of intracellular space, water moves across cell membrane by osmosis only if osmolality on one side of membrane changes. thus when saline 0.9% is added to ECF osmolality is unchanged thus no movement of water occurs, saline is confined to ECF.
