Insulin is a polypeptide stored as pre-proinsulin. When require this is cleaved into insulin a 51 amino acid sequences containing 2 chains joined by 2 disulphide bridges. It facilitates glucose uptake and storage in cells. Half life is 5 minutes in plasma.
