The rate of gastric emptying is REDUCED by:
- lying down/ anxiety/ fear/ pain/ mechanical obstruction/ duodenal distension/ labour / drugs (Opioids, anticholinergic drugs, alcohol, dopamine)
The rate is INCREASED by:
- gastric distension/ drugs ( metoclopramide, domperidone)
Secretin is responsible for stimulating pancreatic secretion. It is released from S cells in the upper small intestine in response to a reduction in duodenal pH. Receptors in the duodenum, when activated, initiate reflex arcs that REDUCE gastric emptying.
Gastric emptying is mainly dependent of the tone of the proximal stomach and pylorus.
